Let the Pulse Asia January 2010 Pre-election Survey serve as the douse of cold water over the collective head of Sen. Noynoy Aquino and his manipulators. The numbers are telling: Noynoy Aquino is fast losing his otherwise “insurmountable” lead, now that the sentimentality over his mother’s death is also fast waning. The January 22-26 survey showed Noynoy, who has 37% of the votes, in a statistical tie for the lead with Sen. Manny Villar, who has 35%. Aquino lost eight percentage points, while Villar gained 12 percentage points since the last survey in December.

Wake up, Noynoy, wake up! No, this is not your yaya telling you to wipe off the sleep from your sleepy eyes. Rather, this is the people telling you to awaken from your pipe dream that you – a mediocre politician who is supposed to be a lawmaker but did not pass a single bill as such, and who did nothing to distinguish himself in his twelve years as a congressman and senator – should be president of this country just because your generally well-loved mother died.

Your manipulators are wrong.

Hanging on your parents’ coattails would not give you a free ride to the presidency. It only succeeded in depicting you as a weakling who could not stand on his own feet. Filipinos do not want a weakling to lead them to nowhere. They want a “man” to lead them to a specific goal. You should step out of Ninoy’s and Cory’s shadows and you should refrain from using them as bit players in your political ads. You might not realize it, but you are exploiting their legacy. They must be squirming in their graves right now.

Demonizing Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (who may be unpopular to the whiners, but who undoubtedly, has brought relative prosperity to the working class and who has built more infrastructure than your mother, Fidel Ramos and Erap Estrada combined) would not get you elected, either. It only pictured you as a dog barking up the wrong tree. Arroyo is not running for president. Duh!

Ganging up on Manny Villar is not working, too. It appears that Villar’s reputation among the electorate is established. His statue seems founded in stone and it looks like it would take a major earthquake to demolish it. The most convincing proof of Villar’s “invincibility” from the negative effects of corruption charges hurled against him is the January 2010 Pulse Asia Survey itself. The survey was done at the height of the Senate debates over the Ethics Committee Report seeking to censure Villar over his alleged hand in the C5 Road Extension Project budget insertions. It did not help that the gang spearheading the charges is comprised of people with no credibility and/or are Villar’s rivals for the presidency.

Your barkers are wrong too, Noynoy.

The presidential election is not a battle between good and evil. Tell Conrado de Quiros, who is still mired in his “good vs. evil” illusion, to stop already. He is not helping your campaign. He only makes Manny Villar appear as an underdog with his tirades, such as implying that Villar (Manny) is the root of all evil with these words: “Who knows? Maybe Noynoy can even say, “Money is the root of all evil.” Pronouncing “Money” with a completely Filipino accent.” Tell de Quiros to exorcize the demons still inside him first – for he is no angel – before he goes around calling other people evil.

Sen. Noynoy, you should start thinking of what you could offer and do for the Filipino people. While your rivals talk about their accomplishments and their plans and goals for the country, you are busy proclaiming that you are the son of Ninoy and Cory, and that you will not steal. “Hindi ako mag-nanakaw”, you arrogantly proclaimed. Really? But what about the infamous Kamag-anak, Inc. of your mother’s time? What about your manipulators who are disguised as your advisers? They will not steal, too? Really?

Lastly, you should seriously consider the suggestion made a month ago by The Bystander:

With the way Noynoy is losing his lead in the surveys every time he opens his mouth, it is safe to assume that it will not take a long time before Villar catches up with him at the top. His handlers should seriously consider him not joining any presidential forums from now on. And he should just let MAR Roxas do all the talking for him. Or maybe Kris…
In other words, you should stop issuing those motherhood statements and simplistic pronouncements that lead to nowhere. You are irritatingly beginning to sound like Chiz Escudero – but without the slickness. But knowing you and your manipulators, errr, advisers, all these suggestions would only fall on your deaf ears and be dismissed by your pious souls once again.

Despite the deliberate leak of a so-called “draft report” that seeks to censure him over his alleged hand in the C5 Road Extension Project budget insertion, Sen. Manny Villar continues to gain in the surveys and in the process, slowly but surely diminish Sen. Noynoy Aquino’s otherwise considerable lead. The “draft report”, which was leaked to the press at the height of the legwork for the latest SWS survey for the May 2010 national election, failed to bring down Villar’s numbers. The January 2010 SWS survey showed Villar further cutting Aquino’s lead to just 7% - down from 11% last December.

The deliberate leak was attributed to the camp of a “presidentiable” – allegedly to Noynoy Aquino’s Liberal Party. Although Noynoy apologists claim that the survey was done before the Senate Ethics Committee Report was presented by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on January 25, it is obvious that the January 22 leakage of the “draft report” was intended to undermine Villar in the January 21-24 survey.

Yet, Villar continues to gain and his main rival Noynoy keeps on losing his lead. Evidence:

Senator Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III still leads in the latest presidential survey conducted January 21-24 by the Social Weather Stations (SWS), but Senator Manny Villar has narrowed the gap to just 7 percentage points.

According to a press release sent out by the Liberal Party (LP) on Monday, its standard-bearer Aquino got 42% support from 2,100 respondents while Villar received 35%.

Aquino's lead over Villar was 19 percentage points in December 5-10 and 11 percentage points in December 27-28…

… Before the filing of candidacy papers, Aquino's lead over the rest of the aspirants was more than 20 percentage points. He had a 27 percentage-point lead over Villar (Aquino 47%; Villar 20%) in the November 4-8 survey of SWS.

The Liberal Party naturally downplayed Villar’s gains and attributed his steady rise to his “massive political ad spending”. There might be some truth to that claim, but certified couch potatoes would attest that Noynoy’s TV ads are almost as ubiquitous as Villar’s. If Villar has the “Naging Mahirap” ad, Noynoy has the “Hindi Ako Magnanakaw” commercial. If Villar has the “Dolphy” endorsement, Noynoy has the “Entire Pinoy Showbiz People (including the Kris Aquino) in Torches” backing. If Villar has his “OFW Champion” ad, Noynoy has his “Rap Artist” commercial. And if Villar has Michael V., Noynoy has Baby James Aquino Yap.

So why does Villar continue to gain and Noynoy keep on losing his lead if their political ad spending is just about comparable? Is it because Villar sends the message across and Noynoy has no message at all, except to pander to his parents’ names? And is it because the tried and tested Villar has the proven track record in experience and performance to go with his message, while the “just-happened” Noynoy does not have either to at least mitigate his lack of message? Is it because Villar seems to represent credibility and stability, while Noynoy only offers hubris and false hope?

Why does Villar continue to gain and Noynoy keep on losing his lead despite the C5 controversy investigations and the ensuing Senate Ethics Committee Report? Is it because the tribunal doing the investigation – the Senate – has now the reputation as a kangaroo court and as a grandstanding venue for politicians? Thanks to all those “investigations-in-aid of legislation” that the Senate constantly churns out, and which only highlight our senators’ voracious appetite for the limelight. In this sense, is it reasonable to believe that the report censuring Villar is only seen by the people as just another piece of crap from the Senate, and thus, should not be taken seriously?

Why does Villar continue to gain and Noynoy keep on losing his lead? Is it because sanity and reason is now finally winning out over hysteria and emotion? Noynoy should now prepare to lose more of his lead in the surveys.

Note: As this piece is being written, Sen. Manny Villar is delivering privilege speech at the Senate absolving himself from the C5 controversy.
